Dear Santa,

I know you are busy because tomorrow is Christmas and the elves are working overtime (like many of our healthcare colleagues), but please take a minute to think about my healthcare wishes for this year – many people would be very grateful if you could help us out.

  1. Please help fix the implementation of the Affordable Care Act so that its original goal can happen – all Americans have access to affordable healthcare. If you could do this, we’d save a lot of lives and keep sick folks from going broke just because they got ill. And while you’re at it, could you strike the word “Obamacare” from every language around the world, for all time? Oh, and while you’re focused on the U.S., could you please spread some permanent Christmas cheer on everyone connected with leading our healthcare system, so we can just get along and do the right things?
  2. Get governments and insurance companies all around the world to pay for healthcare by telehealth and telemedicine. The technology is there to bring healthcare services to people who need it, wherever they are. We need to stop with the “pilot programs” already and make telemedicine a reimbursed, universal mode of delivering care.
  3. Please spread the spirit of global innovation and caring for the underserved that permeated the Health 2.0 conference I attended, to all those brilliant entrepreneurs and scientists who are discovering the ways to make ours a healthier planet – and to the people who can pay for it so that their ideas come out of the laboratory and the incubator and into people’s lives.
  4. Encourage young people to enter the healthcare field so that we have talented, dedicated and caring professionals to take care of all of us.
  5. Let the inspiration of Mr. Mandela’s life and his dedication to eradicating the worldwide AIDS epidemic, especially in Africa, motivate all of us to make this scourge a disease of the past.

Yes, Santa, I know it’s a tall order. And if you think you might need to kick it upstairs to be handled, feel free. Let’s just make 2014 the turning point toward making our healthcare dreams a reality.

From,

A true believer, Joy Scott
