FierceHealthcare recently identified four key trends poised to change the landscape of healthcare.  From the B.E. Smith white paper, Healthcare Trends – 2015, the top four leadership trends in healthcare include the following:

  •  A delicate balance between savings and quality care. As providers continue to struggle with reimbursement cuts and higher patient volumes, they have to find the balance of cutting expenses while at the same time ensuring they continue to offer a high quality of care.
  • Population health emphasis. Developing unconventional partnerships with such organizations like the Red Cross, soup kitchens, and non-government organizations, healthcare leaders realize that to provide the best possible care to a larger portion of the population, physicians will have to go meet with patients in different environments.
  • New leadership environment.  CEO turnover has seen a steady increase over the last few years, reaching a record-breaking twenty percent in 2013. It is important for organizations to have strong interim staff to ensure stability. Executive pay is beginning to slowly trend in the direction of linking pay with performance-based care.
  • Focusing on leadership from physicians.  Fewer physicians are seeking independent practices as they move toward health systems versus independent practices. Though there is an increase of physicians in facilities, only fourteen percent of C-suite hires are physicians. This fact is poised to change, as “physician leadership is linked to broader organizational success.”
