In her article “5 Often-Forgotten Social Media Etiquette Rules,” Jean Aw founder and editor-in-chief of NOTCOT, gives a quick refresher on good online behavior.

Here’s a quick summary of the 5 rules:

1. Offer something of value – make sure it is useful and interesting.
2. Observe someone’s habits before engaging with them – don’t be annoying, communicate with them in their preferred method about things that are of interest to them.
3. Stop and think before you complain – don’t use your feed just to complain; remember Mom’s advice “if you think you shouldn’t say it, don’t.”
4. Be thoughtful about how you react to criticism – if it has merit, respond appropriately; if it doesn’t, feel free to ignore it.
5. Make your style clear and obvious – let people know how and when you like to receive information.
