Now that we have all survived the end of the Mayan calendar, it’s time to look forward. As students of the healthcare scene for more than 30 years now, Scott Public Relations has identified these top five healthcare trends to watch in 2013.

1. Universal coverage. This, we should remember, is the purpose behind the healthcare reform that has come to be known as “Obamacare.” Regardless of what you may think of the model that’s being enacted, we an only cheer that the U.S. is finally ending its status as the last western nation that does not provide its citizens with healthcare coverage.

2. Telemedicine. Finally, we’re reaching the tipping point where telemedicine’s potential to overcome barriers to access, to leverage the scarce resources of healthcare specialists, and to manage healthcare for those with chronic illnesses remotely, can help save our overburdened healthcare system – just in time for the stampede of Baby Boomers into Medicare.

3. New practice models for physicians. Whether it’s the concierge approach, prevention, or integrative medicine, physicians need options to allow them to stay in practice and to see positive results with their patients.

4. Interconnected data. As electronic medical records are populated and medical devices connected, providers will be able to tap the real-time they need to make the best care decisions.

5. Embedding evidence-based medical guidelines into daily medical practice by using technology and academic detailing to educate physicians.

6. Tackling the root cause of chronic illness with lifestyle change programs that are broad-based and incentivized.
